Lot Essay
The design of the base of this table relates quite closely to two tables supplied in 1764 by Thomas Chippendale to Sir Lawrence Dundas for his London mansion at 19 Arlington Street (see C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. 1, pp. 156 and 159). Additionally, there are three tables of the same form at Harewood House that correspond to a Chippendale design from around 1772 (C. Gilbert, op. cit., vol. II, pp. 264 and 256, figs. 464 and 469).
A number of tables with the same base demonstrate the popularity of the design: one sold anonymously Christie's London, 6 July 2000, lot 65 (£67,550); a second sold Christie's London, 11 November 1999, lot 30 (£84,500); a third sold by the late N.M.L. Watson, Esq., Christie's London, 21 November 1985 (lot 52); and a fourth rosewood example sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 18 November 1994, lot 107.
