Lot Essay

The use of an exotic wood as a background for this classically inspired marquetry comprising swagged husks and fan medallion suggest similarities to the work of Thomas Chippendale such as appear on a pembroke table supplied for Newby Hall in around 1775 (illustrated in C.Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol.II, pl.459). The distinctive whorled rosettes and Grecian palmettes can be found on one of his 1770s 'frieze' designs for Burton Constable, Yorkshire (illustrated op.cit., pl.26) as well as on a fall-front secretaire supplied for Harewood House in 1772 (ibid, p.62, fig.96).
