A SET OF TWELVE MAHOGANY AND POLYCHROME-DECORATED DINING CHAIRS
Six side chairs and one armchair George III, circa 1800, four side chairs and one armchair of a later date
Comprising two armchairs and ten side chairs, each with an undulating top-rail centered by a painted oval medallion depicting a musical trophy, with pierced interlaced splats between foliate-capped reeded uprights over the seat covered in striped cotton, with reeded rails and turned tapered legs headed by swag painted tablets, four of the Georgian side chairs bearing a circular paper label to the seatrail, W&J Sloane/Floor Coverings/Furniture/Fifth Avenue & 47th St./New York and inscribed in ink P2686, the blocks replaced to the Georgian chairs (12)

Lot Essay

A set of ten closely related chairs signed and dated in ink 'J Peel Nov 29 1801' was sold Christie's London, 27 February 1992, lot 136 (£18,700) and are illustrated in C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p.370, fig.724. Another similar set of eight from the Bjorkman Collection was sold in these Rooms, 19 October 2000, lot 193 ($15,275).
