The arched toprail and downswept sides carved with ribbon-tied berried-leaf decoration, with upholstered back, sides and seat on bellflower-carved fluted baluster column supports with paterae terninals, with leaf-carved seatrail on turned, reeded and beaded collared tapering legs

Lot Essay

A side chair from this suite is illustrated in R.W. Symonds, Masterpieces of English Furniture and Clocks, 1940, p.20, fig.12. A set of twelve chairs from the collection of Francis P. Garvan (purchased from Arthur S. Vernay in 1929) was sold by from the collection of Vernay and Jussel, New York, Sotheby's New York, 25 April 1992, lot 471. Another pair was sold by Sotheby's New York, 21 January 1995, lot 352.
