The top George III circa 1775 and and attributed to Mayhew and Ince, the base late 19th century and reusing the carcase from a George III side table
The demilune top with a central bellflower and guilloche-decorated panel issuing foliate scrolled tendrils in a radiating pattern within a crossbanded and line-inlaid border, the frieze decorated with rosettes and bellflower swags above four rosette-centered foliate scrolled panels between inlaid uprights, the center two panels hinged to reveal a shelf, raised on squat square tapered legs, stamped with the numbers 40071 to the reverse and with a label inscribed Art and Antique Dealers League of America, and the remains of a lot tag inscribed J.F.Ivo/8035/DETROIT/Lot...

Lot Essay

The top on this commode exhibits fine detailed floral swags enhanced by engraving in combination with bold stylized rendering of the guilloche band, features associated with the work of the Golden Square firm of Mayhew and Ince (see a commode in the collection of the Lady Lever Art Gallery as illustrated and discussed in L.Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, no.26, pp.222-225; and another formerly in the Leverhulme collection and sold from the Dr. Norman Gay collection, Christie's London, 28 June 1984, lot 33).
