A RARE PAINTED GRAY POTTERY FIGURE OF A DUCK

The hollow figure realistically modeled and painted in shades of cream and pale ochre with overlapping feathers on the body and broad areas of pigment which delineate the details of the head below the raised rim of the circular aperture in the top of the head, with one large red feather on either side of the wings, the whole raised on a flat base

A very similar painted pottery duck raised on a flat circular base is in the Eumorfopoulos Collection, illustrated by R.L. Hobson in the Catalogue, vol. VI, London, 1928, F15, pl. 4. Compare, also, the pair of ducks illustrated by Regina Krahl in Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. I, London, 1994, p.49, fig. 14

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 766h80 is consistent with the dating of this lot
