A RARE SMALL SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY WATERDROPPER
TANG DYNASTY

Of globular form, the shoulder set with a small tortoise-head spout glazed green and applied with five evenly spaced amber and green-glazed leaves, all reserved on a cream-glazed ground ending in an irregular line above the flared foot to expose the fine-grained ware (some restoration)

Lot Essay

A similarly glazed jar of this form, also applied on the shoulder with an animal head and leaves, was included in the exhibition, Chinesische Kunst, Berlin, 1929, no. 390; another with a sancai glaze, but with a cover, is illustrated by W. P. Yetts in the Eumorfopoulos Collection Catalogue, vol. I, London, 1929, P. LIII, no. 366; and a third example with applied leaves but a cylindrical spout was included in the exhibition, La Chine Antique, Musée de Mariemont, 1970, Catalogue, no. 66
