LATE MING DYNASTY
Carved as a tapering mountain with Shoulao seated upon a cloud-borne phoenix at the peak, the moon forming a halo behind his head, the base of the mountain carved in low relief with further clouds and a prunus tree and in high relief with the Eight Immortals on one side, flanked by a deer and a monkey holding a peach, and on the reverse with three equestrian figures and two attendants, all raised on an hexagonal plinth, the ivory with a warm, ochre patina
