Finely worked on the front and back in satin stitch in brightly colored threads with eight roundels of cranes and flowers, above the terrestrial diagram and lishui stripe at the hem, all picked out in shades of blue, green, purple and yellow reserved on a black ground

This surcoat would have been part of a set of garments, worn over another robe with a red ground and side opening; probably with an identical pattern. A good example of this type of matched set was included in the exhibition, Chinese Textiles, Spink & Son, London, December 5-23, 1994, illustrated by Jacqueline Simcox in the Catalogue, nos. 54 and 55
