Thinly potted with a deep, flaring cylindrical cup supported on a plain slender stem intersected by a compressed globular bulb pierced with rows of vertical slits, above the stepped shallow foot, earth encrustation (some damage and repair)

Lot Essay

Thin, lustrous black pottery was made by the Neolithic cultures of Dawenkou and Longshan in the area of present day Shandong province in Northeastern China. A black pottery stem cup of the same size but different form, was sold in these rooms, June 2, 1994, lot 228

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 766j30 is consistent with the dating of this lot
