TWO SANCAI-GLAZED POTTERY FIGURES OF FEMALE MUSICIANS
TANG DYNASTY

Each seated on a square base with her hands positioned to hold an instrument, identically dressed in long flowing amber dresses with differently glazed tight sleeves and long shawls tucked into the sash tied above the waist on one side and falling to the base on the other, the hair drawn up into a double topknot and painted black (extensively restored)

Compare two very similar kneeling figures from the collection of Dr. Eric Vio, illustrated by Mario Prodan, The Art of the T'ang Potter, New York, 1960, p. 130. The author mentions that the style of the hairdress of the figures has been traced to the Near East
