AN UNUSUAL BROWN-GLAZED SGRAFFIATO CIZHOU VASE

The stout, barrel-shaped body rising from the knife-pared foot to sloping shoulders and a short flared neck, the rim unglazed, covered overall with a matte, brown glaze carved through to the granular, buff ware with three bands divided into panels, the upper and lower each with eight characters, the central band with the Eight Trigrams, all below a border of comma motifs (chips to base)

Lot Essay

The characters in the top band read, Shuai jiu zi ji bu shi er yuan, and the meaning seems to be incomplete as it stands
The characters in the lower band read, Wu nan er nü qi zi tuan yuan, and may be translated, "Five men, two women, seven offspring make a family union"
