The inscription on the box reads, "Ancient mottled bamboo brush.
After the rain, the wind blows in the bamboo, it is clear everywhere; a Qing plaything"
This type of bamboo is called banzhu or xiangfeizhu. The latter is the name of a kind of speckled bamboo which grows in Hunan and Guangxi; the legend is that it became speckled by the tears which the wives of Shun shed over his grave
An example of this kind of mottled bamboo brush is illustrated by Michel Beurdeley in The Chinese Collector Through the Centuries, Rutland, Vermont and Tokyo, 1966, p. 238 no. 86, where the inscription on the brush is mentioned. It celebrates the four essential virtues of a brush: "fullness of shape, strength, eveness and sharpness". Another three, of earlier date, from the Shosoin Collection are illustrated in the same volume, p. 238, no. 85
