DODGSON, Rev. CHARLES LUTWIDGE ("Lewis Carroll"). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1866. Wood-engraved illustrations after John Tenniel. 8vo, original red cloth, gilt-decorated, g.e., spine ends a little frayed, corners bumped, small horizontal black mark across lower spine, binding somewhat leaned, contemporary gift inscription on frontispiece recto. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, comprising the original rejected sheets from the London 1865 issue with a cancelled title-page (New York: D. Appleton, 1866). Williams, Madan, and Green 44.
The original English copies were withdrawn from the London Market due to Tenniel's dissatisfaction with the printing of his illustrations. Carroll agreed and had the entire edition withdrawn from the London market. These copies were then sold to D. Appleton & Co. of New York, who issued them as the first American edition in 1866 with the cancelled title. (3)
