FINE, SCARCE, THE SIX CENTS 1869 PICTORIAL PAYING THE SIX-CENT RATE TO IRELAND, REPORTED TO BE A UNIQUE USAGE

Lot Essay

Provenance: ex John C. Juhring, Louis Grunin, Ryohei Ishikawa

Literature: Noted in Jonathan W. Rose and Richard M. Searing
The 1869 Issue on Cover: A Census and Analysis,
in a chapter by Millard H. Mack entitled 'The
Six-Cent 1869 on Cover', pp. 29, 44

Expertization: 1978 and 1993 P.F. certificates

Note: Despite having two 'genuine' P.F. certificates,
there are different perspectives regarding this
cover. The cover is exactly as mailed in 1870
by the sender (nothing has been added and all
markings are original and have not been altered).
The local stamp was used at the same time as the
six cents 1869 Pictorial, but since there are no
Hussey markings, there is no evidence that the
local stamp saw actual postal duty.
