Lot Essay

This type of sleeping cupid is derived from ancient Roman examples. The young Michelangelo made a version in marble, meant to deceive as an antiquity. The modelling, surface treatment and iconography are consistant with later Renaissance carving and are stylistically close to the work of Mosca.
