Lot Essay

The exaggerated bombé form and the distinctive parquetry design place this commode within a distinct group of Neapolitan commodes dating from circa 1760-70. A similar example is illustrated in A. Cottino and G. Massara, Mobili Italiani Del Settecento, 1990, p. 69. Another related pair of commodes was sold in these Rooms, 4 November 1992, lot 135. A single Neapolitan commode with similar orange marble top was sold Christie's London, 6 June 1991, lot 303.
