The upper section with scrolled pedimented top with foliage and rocaille above two arched mirrored doors opening to a fitted arcaded interior, the lower section with fall-front opening to a fitted interior above three drawers on cabriole legs ending in hoof feet, decorated throughout with foliage and flowers within gilt cartouches and strapwork borders (extensive losses to decoration, repairs to legs) --94in. Lot Essay

The repeated use of cartouches employing borders with raised floral decoration combined with the undulating apron and the distinctively shaped cabriole hoof feet relate this spectacular cabinet to a group of decorated commodes from Naples and Sicily. A commode with similar floral cartouches and legs is illustrated in W. Odom, Italian Furniture, 1967, p. 123, fig. 147. Three other related Sicilian commodes are illustrated in M. Giarrizo and A.
