Lot Essay

The tapering female herm backplate in the Egyptian manner is based on a design for an oil lamp from the workshops of Delarme now in the Bibliothèque Marmottan Paris (illustrated in N. de Reynies, Le Mobilier Domestique, Paris, 1987, vol. II, p. 731, fig. 2712). Other oil lamps with this backplate were offered Christie's London, 15 June 1995, lot 54 and sold anonymously at Sotheby's Monaco, 16 June 1990, lot 896 and 30 November 1986, lot 919. A tôle peint table with similar female herm supports is illustrated in F. de Dampierre, The Best of Painted Furniture, p.186, 1987.
