Lot Essay

The distinctive marquetry and mounts of this commode place it firmly within a group of Swedish neoclassic commodes executed in the 1780's. A commode by the Stockholm maker, Jonas Hulsten, 1780, with similar trellis inlay and an identical ribbon-tied apron mount is in Gustaf III's retreat, Gripsholm Castle, and illustrated in H. Groth, Neoclassicism in the North, 1990, p.43, fig. 17. A commode by George Haupt (1741-1784 received master in 1770) with a closely related apron mount is illustrated in S. Wallin, Mobler fran Svenska Herremanshem, vol. II, p. 78, fig. 483. Other commodes with this same mount are illustrated in H. Groth, op. cit figs. 31 and 160 and S. Wallin op. cit, figs. 484, 485 and 491.
