Lot Essay

La Grande Helvétie was manufactured by Zuber of Rixheim with its original edition in 1804. The set was designed by Pierre-Antoine Mangin from a variety of sources including contemporary engravings and romantic landscape paintings by artists such as Caspar Wolf. The illustrated panel shows two travellers being led by a guide, reputedly depicting Mangin himself with his painting equipment, with his travelling companion, the naturalist Johann.
