Lot Essay

The fashion for combining oriental lacquer with satinwood case pieces enjoyed great popularity in the Netherlands at the end of the 18th century. Mathijs Horrix supplied Princess Wilhelmina with a number of commodes inlaid with oriental lacquer provided by the princess while a sale at the Hague in 1797 included cabinets including one 'à l'Antique' being exceptionally finely inlaid with East Indian lacquer' (see R. Baarsen, Nederlandse Meubelen 1600-1800, 1993, p.128). A similar secrétaire à abattant was sold Christie's London, 19 May 1994, lot 64.
