A LOUIS XV/XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED TULIPWOOD MARQUETRY COMMODE

With breakfront pink and white marble top above three frieze drawers and two further drawers inlaid sans traverse with a central musical trophy flanked by parquetry, the sides similarly inlaid on cabriole legs ending in scroll sabots (restorations to veneers, some mounts of a later date)--35¾in. (91cm.) high, 44¼in. (112.4cm.) wide, 22¾in. (57.8cm.) deep

Lot Essay

This model of breakfront commode first evolved in the Oeben workshop in 1760-62. The form was especially favored by the ébeniste du Roi, Gilles Joubert, who supplied numerous commodes of this pattern from 1765-1775 (see H. Roberts 'Gilles Joubert as Subcontractor', Furniture History Society Journal, 1985, pp. 32-35, figs. 4-7).
