Lot Essay
The offered lot with its large mirrored panels within smaller slips and its elaborately carved scrolling frame relates to mirrors made in northern Italy in the mid-18th century. Often incorporated into the panelling of the rooms these mirrors were important architectural features of Italian rococo interiors. A Piedmontese mirror with a similar trailing vine and scrolling frame is illustrated in M. Agnelli, Mobili Italiani del Settecento, 1990, p. 165. Another Venetian overmantel mirror incorporating a painted panel at the crest is at the Palazzo Zenobio and is illustrated in G. Mariacher, Specchiere Italiane, 1963, 115 and another is at the Musei dela Castello Sforzesco, Milan, G. Mariacher op. cit, fig. 116.
