cover 2p scarlet vermilion, bisected, and 5p brown violet (2, 5; S.G.2, S.G.5), both well tied to folded cover from Harbour Grace to Ringwood, Hants., England; the bisect with small corner crease and the 5p with a small tear; folded cover, endorsed "per Galway Steamer - via New York" showing Harbor Grace MY 4 1860 d.s., New York Am. Pkt. 21 MAY 12 marking and Ringwood MY 26 1860 arrival d.s., backstamped St. John's Newfoundland MY 5 1860 and London MY 26 60; at the time of the Dale-Lichtenstein sales, this cover received an R.P.S. Certificate stating "unable to certify this bisect which may be genuine. An extra stamp seems to have been removed". An extra 1p stamp has been added to the folded cover to illustrate how it might have originally appeared. Offered "as is"

EXPERTIZATION:
1969 R.P.S. Certificate, not present

NOTE:
Robert H. Pratt considered this to be a perfectly genuine franking and that the missing stamp was a 1p; originally, the 5p and the bisected 2p would have made up the 6p direct route to the United Kingdom. However, as no ship was due for some two months, it was rerouted via New York and this entailed a rate of 6½p stg. from interior to port, so the 1p stamp was added. It remains the only recorded example of the 2p bisect
est.
