1894 JAMES NAISMITH SIGNED CERTIFICATE
A Certificate of the International Young Men's Christian Association Training School in Springfield, Massachussets dated June 20, 1894 signed by the faculty including Luther Gulick and James Naismith, the inventors of the game of basketball. In 1891 Gulick as Superintendent requested that Naismith develop a new indoor game. The result was basketball and the first game was played at the YMCA gymnasium on December 21, 1891. This certificate is the only documentary link between Naismith, Gulick and the Springfield YMCA. The emblem on the certificate is the oldest known YMCA seal. Naismith was the first individual enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. The Certificate was on exhibit at the Basketball Hall of Fame for two years. A unique historical document.
