CORBETT VS. FITZSIMMONS CONTRACT, 1897
A signed copy of the contract for the heavyweight championship fight between James J. Corbett and Robert Fitzsimmons dated 1897. The contract is signed by both Corbett and Fitzsimmons as well as a representative of Richard J. Fox, the promoter. The contract is framed with a copy of a previous draft and two licences for bouts to be held on the same date in 1897, including one for a fight of Mysterious Billy Smith. This is the earliest known surviving contract for a heavyweight title fight. The signatures are large and bold. Fitzsimmons won the fight in 14 rounds. A very historic document.
