The present composition, together with a number of other similar works by Locatelli, reveal the influence of Salvator Rosa and are dated by Busiri Vici to circa 1725-30 (see A. Busiri Vici, Andrea Locatelli, 1976, nos. 117, 118, 149, 150, 151, 154, 156, & 157). A painting of similar proportions is recorded in the Musée Fabre, Inv. no. 837-1-53 (ibid., no. 117).
