The present painting is based on the picture in the Palacio Pedralves, Barcelona, attributed to the school of Guido Reni presently on loan from the Museo del Prado, Madrid, Inv. no. 230. In private correspondence D. Stephen Pepper confirms the attribution to Vanni which he notes is also endorsed by Sir Denis Mahon. He dates this painting to circa 1606 citing the close collaboration between Reni, Vanni and their patron, Cardinal Paolo Emilio Sfondrato, at that time.
