The form of this bookcase with its gothic arched astragals, and fretwork waist and details is based on a design dated 1753 for a 'Desk and Bookcase' published in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd edn., 1762, pl.CIX. This piece was almost certainly made by a local cabinetmaker subscribing to The Director. Its wide proportions are characteristic of pieces produced in the north of England.
