Lot Essay

The firm of Kendell is recorded in the Leeds Trade Directories from 1790. They worked at Harewood House in the 1820's and probably began labelling furniture in the 1840's. Marsh & Jones took over the business in 1863. Several pieces bearing the Kendell label exist, including a dressing-table in the collection of Temple Newsam House, Leeds (label is reproduced in C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, 1978, vol.II, p.332, no.48).
