Percival D. Griffiths was one of the foremost English collectors at the earlier part of this century. The focus of his collection was early walnut and mid-Georgian carved mahogany examples. Advised by the noted furniture connoisseur and dealer R.W. Symonds. Many pieces from his collection including this barometer, are illustrated in books by Symonds such as English Furniture from Charles II to George II (1929). Christie's sold much of the Percival Griffiths collection following his death in 1939.

The finely engraved indicator, spiral-gadrooned lower section to the stem and figural-cast feet are all characteristics found on examples by the pre-eminant clock and barometer-maker, Daniel Quare (d.1724) (see N.Goodison, English Barometers 1680-1860, 1977, pp.206-221).
