Lot Essay

This piece is virtually identical to one sold from the collection of the late Lord Samuel of Wych Cross, Sotheby's London, 19 November 1989, lot 127. According to family tradition, the Samuel cabinet (which has a superstructure of five shelves) had been the property of the Rev. George Stonestreet, who as chaplain to the Guards and personal chaplain to the Duke of York, received the cabinet as a show of appreciation for his services during the battle of Waterloo.
