Lot Essay

The present vase is a rare marked majolica example of this model. Majolica as a material was unknown prior to 1849 and was introduced by Minton at the Great Exhibition of 1851. As the use of the impressed MINTON mark was not used until 1862 and as an 'S' was added to the name in 1871, the present vase must have been made within this nine-year span. The following lot, though unmarked, would appear to be a porcelain example of this same model.
