Lot Essay

Van Duzer notes that Thackeray was enraged by one of Doyle's cuts to 'The Newcomes': "Why, they would as soon have thought of cutting off their own heads as play at marbles at the Charterhouse". Crowe records the cut suppressed in future editions, but Van Duzer denies this. It is present in this copy on p. 35 of vol. I.
