A collection of twelve nineteenth century a.l.s. and verses addressed to Dr. David Nicholson, Superintendent of Broadmoor State Asylum, mostly by inmates, the letters are complaints, requests, or ravings, the writers include Roderick E. Maclean (who shot at Queen Victoria at Windsor Station in 1882), Miss Christina Edmunds "The Brighton Poisoner" (who attempted to poison a Doctor's wife by strychnine in a sweet; she also poisoned a local confectioner's stock to divert suspicion, killing a boy in the process), Henry Dodworth (who fired blanks at the Master of the Rolls), James Hadfield (who attempted to assassinate George III by shooting at him at the Drury Lane Theatre on the 15th of May 1800), an autographed verse lamenting the death of his pet bird '...who with his vocal lays did off my spirits cheer' , written at Bethlem Hospital, 3rd October 1806 and an a.l.s from the 3rd Earl of Portsmouth (1767-1853) who was declared insane, seeking a second meeting with '...that handsome beautiful elegant Lady'.
