Lot Essay

The arms are those of Brydges quartering those of Bruce with those of Nichol on an escutcheon of pretence, as borne by James, 3rd Duke of Chandos, born in 1731, who married in 1753, as his first wife, Margaret, daughter and heiress of John Nicholl of Middlesex. She brought him a dowry of /p150,000. She died on August 29, 1768. The Duke, who was styled Marquess of Carnarvon until the death of his father in 1771, died in 1789.
