This company was the final product of many preceding companies in Taunton, Massachusetts: Babbitt and Crossman; Babbitt, Crossman and Company; Crossman, West and Leonard; and finally in 1840, the partners, Henry G. Reed and Charles E. Barton, established their company as it is presently known.
