Lot Essay

The artist drew the outline of the bathrobe on a large sheet of masonite. The printer, Maurice Payne, had the masonite cut along the lines of the drawing. The masonite 'puzzle' was placed over a large sheet of paper and, as each section was lifted one at a time, paint was sprayed through the stencil opening. After each section had been lifted and spray painted, the robe was cut along the outlines and collaged to a support sheet. (Williams College, p. 48)
