Lot Essay

Thomas Thoroton (1723-84), a politian and land-owner, was agent to the Duke of Rutland. His main estate, Screveton Hall, was about 20 miles from Alfreton. In the lower cartouche it is written 'N.B. The Coal and Iron-stone upon the Commons and Waste-lands in the Said Parish of Alfreton are Held by Thomas Thoroton under a Grant From the Crown and in the Freeholds by Purchase.'
