Lot Essay

The design for this timepiece, with circular watch movement supported by a horse, relates to a drawing for a clock case attributed to François Vion, maître fondeur in 1764, in the Bibliothèque Doucet (see H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol. I, p. 180, fig. 3.7.8). Other clocks of this model have sold Christie's London, 22 June 1989, lot 19; from the collection of Mrs. Robert Tritton, Godmersham Park Kent, Christie's-on-the-Premises, 6-9 June 1983, lot 174; and from the collection of Alice Tully, sold in these Rooms, 26-28 October 1994, lot 262.
