Lot Essay

A pair of ewers of this model by Claude Galle is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol. I, p. 364, fig. 5.12.6. Other examples are in the Württemberg Landesmuseum, Stuttgart and at the palace of Pavlovsk near St. Petersburg; and sold in these Rooms, 13 June, 1987, lot 51 and Sotheby's, New York, 4 May 1984, lot 12.

Claude Galle worked with some of the premier bronzier-ciseleurs of the late 18th century and early 19th century. He executed a number of pieces in collaboration with Pierre-Philipe Thomire and worked on a number of pieces for the Garde meuble de la Couronne under Jean d'Heure from 1786-1788.
