Lot Essay

These candelabra relate to a group of figural candelabra executed after designs by Clodion. A drawing for candelabra of similar design is preserved at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs and is thought to be from a page of the marchand-mercier Dominique Daguerre's catalogue (see H. Ottomeyer and P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol. I, p. 282, fig. 4.14.4). A similar set, executed in bronze, are in the Wallace Collection (see F.J.B. Watson, The Wallace Collection Catalogues, Furniture, 1956, p. 90, no. F142-145, fig. 180). A similar pair executed in marble was in the collection of the Earl of Rosebery, Mentmore, Buckinghamshire, sold Sotheby's, 18-20 May 1977, vol. II, lot 243.
