Lot Essay

Jean-Pierre Dusautoy, maître in 1779

The offered lot forms part of a group of tables en chiffonnière by Dusautoy, all of which share characteristics of what must have been an extremely popular model incorporating trellis parquetry enclosing paterae found on the frieze and undertier but with distinct variations, some of which include floral marquetry. Related tables are illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, 1989, p. 292, figs. A and B; J. Nicolay, L'Art et la Manière des Maîtres Ebénistes Français au XVIIIe Siècle, 1956, p. 171, fig. A; another in the collection of Mrs. Charles Wrightsman is illustrated in F.J.B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, 1966, vol. I, p. 276. Related examples were sold from the collection of Comte Charles de Solis, Christie's London, 19 March 1964, lots 97 and 98; and in these Rooms, 26 April 1994, lot 263.
