Lot Essay

Jacques Dubois, maître in 1742

Grand Duke Paul most likely refers to Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovitch of Russia (1860-1918) who resided in France with his second wife, Countess Hohenfelsen and returned to Russia where he was executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918. A similar table by Dubois with closely related parquetry and marquetry designs was in the Garbisch Collection, sold Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc., New York, 17 May 1980, vol. II, lot 291.
