HEMINGWAY'S COPY, inscribed to him on a rear flyleaf (on paper pasted to the flyleaf, same size as the page) by his mother in 1918 (when he went to serve as an ambulance driver on the Italian front): "My Darling Son. If you forget everything else; never forget that Jesus Christ died for you to give you ever-lasting life. Your Mother" (followed by a four-line religious quotation). On the front free endpaper is inscribed: "Ernest Miller Hemingway with the affectionate regards of the 1st Congregational Church [of Oak Park, Ill.] and of its minister William E. Barton." A pocket-size edition of the New Testament for soldiers with "A Prayer for a Soldier," "America," and Battle Hymn of the Republic," etc., printed on the endpapers.
