FIRST EDITION of the author's first book, a collection of poetry, one of 250 copies, SPLENDID PRESENTATION COPY TO HIS BRIDE-TO-BE, inscribed by Huxley with eight lines of verse on the half-title: "Maria from Aldous 1917." The poem, entitled "Life & Poetry," is written below the inscription: "Canals as green as rusted bronze, Namelessly rotting through the years Await the shout of gondoliers, The magic fleet of swans And chambers, where the muffling heat With solid darkness weights the eyes, Thrill to the sudden cool surprise Of a fan's winged beat."
