JAMES, HENRY. The Author of Beltraffio, Pandora, Georgina's Reasons, The Path of Duty, Four Meetings. Boston: James R. Osgood 1885. 8vo, original purple brown cloth, joints and edges slightly rubbed, inner hinges tender, half morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY TO HIS AUNT, inscribed by James at head of the Contents page: "Catharine Walsh from the Author. February 1885" (publication month). Aunt Kate, James's mother's younger sister, was "a member of the James household, lived and travelled with her sister's family, and was in every way a second mother to the James children. Lively, spirited, with much wit, she was more out-giving than her older sister. She married, late in life, but perhaps she had waited too long, for shortly afterwards she and her husband parted and she resumed her perpetual role of the family aunt among her kinfolk"--Edel, Life, I, p. 30.
