First English Edition, First Printing, Second Issue with the "In Preparation" leaf following last leaf of text, frontispiece portrait, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author: "For his dear/Ruth Draper/her fond old/Henry James/May 27th, 1913." In 1912 "the young Ruth Draper...descended on London from America to do her inimitable monologues at that time in some of the great houses of England; later and for many years she would perform publicly in the theatre. James was fascinated by her from the first. 'Little Ruth is a dear of dears,' he wrote, 'and her talent has really an extraordinary charm.'
