Lot Essay

An unsigned pencil drawing by George Bullock at Tew Park, Great Tew, Oxfordshire, and inscribed in his hand 'Plan of Stove in Dining Room and Oak Study', appears to confirm the attribution to Bullock of this distinctive design, first made in the exhibition catalogue, The Fashionable Fireplace, 1660-1840, Temple Newsam House 1985, p.30, no.22.

Similar examples were sold in Christie's, New York, 17 October 1987, Lot 30, as well as four at Great Tew Park, Christie's House Sale, 27-29 May 1987, Lots 4, 27, 48 and 155, the design illustrated p.39.
